Some call Coweta “Little Hollywood”; we call it home.

Location, location, location

Our charismatic county has been the backdrop for more than 100 small-screen and blockbuster titles, ranging from horror to heartfelt. When production wraps, the fans roll in to experience all their favorite on-screen moments in real life (zombies optional). So, join us as we tour some of film and television’s most memorable sets, and you’ll discover how curiously camera-ready we are.

Grantville

Don’t let the size of this town deceive you. Grantville may be a small stop off Highway 29, but it takes its leading roles very seriously. As you walk through downtown, you might begin to catch glimpses of the undead. That is, scenes from The Walking Dead. Home to several key sets, including Rick’s fictional hometown and Morgan’s season three apartment, Grantville is prominently featured throughout the series. Remnants of filming can still be seen at 18 Church St., where “Away With You” is scrawled on the brick wall.

In 2023, the community was given new life when filming began for The Color Purple. Four decades after Georgia native Alice Walker wrote The Color Purple and Steven Spielberg adapted it into a major motion picture, the beloved story takes to the screen again, with Grantville setting the scene. Throughout downtown, building facades were decorated to reflect the aesthetics of the late 19th-century. Not one to be typecast, Grantville can transform itself for the past, present and the post-apocalyptic.

Newnan

Doll house or haunted house? It depends on the role. But one thing is for certain: The Parrott-Camp-Soucy House is one of Newnan’s most iconic addresses. And Hollywood has noticed it, too. Its most famous part was playing the house in The House With The Clock In Its Walls (2018) and is featured front and center on the film’s poster. We cannot confirm or deny if there are actual clocks in any of the walls, but some Newnan residents have reported mysterious ticking sounds from time to time. Other appearances include The Odd Life of Timothy Green (2012) and HBO’s Lovecraft Country series (2018).

Head further into downtown Newnan and Michael Keaton fans will notice some uncanny similarities to scenes from The Founder (2016). Despite being set in 1950s San Bernardino, California, production had to find an alternative place to shoot because modern San Bernardino doesn’t look like it did back in the 1950s. Well, Newnan doesn’t look quite like 1950s San Bernardino either, so the crew got to work. A recreation of the very first octagonal McDonald Brothers restaurant was built in the Coweta County Administration Building’s employee parking lot. It no longer stands today–people have to park, after all–but the short-lived structure was seen as a generally accurate reproduction of the original McDonald’s.

Today, downtown Newnan is far more vibrant than what you’ll see in the film, but don’t be fooled. These very streets were transformed from a charming Southern town into a zombie wasteland for 2009’s Zombieland. Retrace Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson’s steps with a walk down Greenville Street. Their characters scurry southbound from the Broad St. intersection and stop in front of the real-life Newnan Mercantile and Bold Soul Originals, where Woody Harrelson’s character, Tallahassee, blows off some steam by smashing a van’s windows with a baseball bat.

Senoia

Although we like it just as it is, Senoia excels at playing the part of “somewhere else.” Despite taking place in Alabama, Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) was filmed right here in our backyard. Two settings pivotal to the movie’s plot, The Threadgoode house and the iconic railroad bridge, can be seen throughout the film. Located at 204 Bridge Street, the Travis-McDaniel house and the railroad bridge sit right across the street from one another. The home is privately owned, but fans can enjoy it from the street as they walk or drive by to visit another Senoia sensation.

Just two blocks away sits Nic & Norman’s, a laid-back classic pub owned by The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus, who plays fan-favorite Daryl Dixon, and prosthetic artist/director Greg Nicotero. It’s no mystery why they chose Senoia as their flagship location: the city was featured throughout the series and was Woodbury, the home of notorious villain, The Governor.

Speaking of famous folks… We don’t need six degrees to get to Kevin Bacon. Two will do just fine. Kevin famously starred as Ren in the original Footloose (1984). The iconic bus race scenes for the 2011 adaptation of Footloose were filmed at the Senoia Raceway. Let’s just say, we’re pretty well connected. (Bonus points: Julianne Hough, who played the part of Ariel in the 2011 version, worked with Kevin in Step Into… The Movies with Derek and Julianne Hough.

Haralson

Just 6.5 miles south of Senoia sits Esco Feed Mills in Haralson. Walking Dead fans will know this one as it was the setting for several key scenes (no spoilers!).

The former feed mill, or The Silo as it’s known in the series, made its debut in season three and was featured in the opening credits onward.

Get away to a place where the birdies chirp in the trees and chip on the greens, time is well spent and there’s always something curious to discover.

Friday

Dinner at Redneck Gourmet

Redneck Gourmet is true to its name: good eats without pretentiousness. With must-order local fare like Fried Green Tomatoes and a few new spins on Georgia classics, there’s no mistaking it: you’re in the South. We suggest the Fried Pickles and their Redneck Caviar as your pre-game choice before your entree’s. And before you wander too far off, pay a visit to Below the Neck, a full-service bar located just below the restaurant.

Another option is just down the street. The Cellar’s casual venue, The Bays features a large bar, two patios and plenty of games (Giant Jenga, anyone?) and space to sit back and relax. Live music is a staple here so check their website to see who’s playing.

After Dinner: Line Creek Brewing Co.

If cold ones are what you are seeking, head on over to Line Creek Brewing Co. to throw a few brews back with the boys. Specializing in high gravity and barrel-aged beers, Line Creek boasts 24 craft drafts. Can’t decide on just one?

Start with a flight to get the good times flowing.

Line Creek has a calendar full of special events, visiting food trucks and live music. Check it out on their website to get the full pour on what’s coming out.

Saturday

Breakfast at Christy’s Cafe

A trip to Newnan isn’t complete without indulging in a hearty breakfast. This local favorite offers all the classic dishes, but what truly sets it apart is that breakfast is served all day!

From biscuits and gravy to omelets and skillets, there’s something to satisfy every craving.

Morning Activity: Golf at Summer Grove Golf Club

After breakfast, get in a quick nine or play the whole course at Summer Grove Golf Club. This 18-hole, par 72 championship course stretches to 6,954 yards from the back tees. With five places to swing your shot, you’ll find the perfect level of challenge for your game.

This beautifully designed course is open to the public; however, you will need to book a tee time in advance.

Lunch at Matt’s Smalltown Pizza

Fuel up with a pie from Senoia staple, Matt’s Smalltown Pizza. Fresh dough made daily is topped with 100% all-natural, whole milk mozzarella and your choice of 31 toppings. While you can’t go wrong with a classic cheese and pep’, locals and visitors alike rave about the Buffalo Chicken Pizza.

Not feelin’ cheesy? Wing it instead with an order of 6-100 flats and drumsticks. They have 11 flavor options, including all the classics, but when in Georgia, you gotta go with Lemon Pepper.

Afternoon Activity: The Walking Dead Tour of Senoia

Senoia, or rather, Woodbury, as it’s known in The Walking Dead, has been a primary filming location for the show since the series’ third season. Get a look behind the scenes with a tour around downtown Senoia. You’ll see iconic locations such as the Alexandria Safe-Zone, The Governor’s Residence and the Train Tracks.

Self-guided tours are available, but we highly recommend guided tours as many guides have behind-the-scenes connections to the show.

Dinner at Nic & Norman’s

Feast like the undead at Nic & Norman’s, a fan and foodie favorite co-owned by The Walking Dead star Norman Reedus and producer Greg Nicotero. There’s something for everyone on this all-American menu, including gourmet burgers, steaks and salads. Meat-lovers will love the BBQ filled Pork Sliders.

Looking for plant-based protein? Opt for Norman’s Pick, an Impossible brand plant-based patty topped with a fried egg and dressed with beets, avocado, spinach and soy ginger sauce.

After Dinner: HOP-fully Sipping on IPAs

Nestled in the heart of downtown Senoia, Pearl & Pine Brewery and Senoia Beer Co. offer a delightful brewery experience just a short stroll apart. Breakfast at Leaf and Bean Newnan

Late Morning Activity: Visit to Chattahoochee Bend State Park

Lace up your hiking boots or maybe just your sneakers. Chattahoochee Bend State Park has a variety of trails to challenge seasoned hikers and those seeking a leisurely escape into nature. As one of Georgia’s largest state parks, Chattahoochee Bend boasts 2,910 acres of forest, much of which has been left in its natural state, and a whopping five miles of frontage alongside the Chattahoochee.

A boat ramp offers easy access to the water for those who packed their paddles and poles.

Lunch at Meat N’ Greet

Wrap up your weekend with the best. Winner of Newnan-Coweta Magazine’s Best of Coweta Award for six years running, Meat N’ Greet is a meat lover’s paradise. Their menu highlights…ten unique burgers stacked with all the fixins upon their signature MNG patties, made from a blend of chuck, brisket and short rib. If you’re feeling more like a frank, go with The Heavy Hitter, a 100% All-Natural Angus Beef hot dog topped with bacon jam, chili-mayo and jalapeños.

Wash it all down with a bourbon flight.

Friday

Dinner at The Cellar & The Bays

Kick off the weekend with dinner at The Cellar, a cozy yet elegant restaurant known for its upscale Southern fare. The Fried Pickles with curried mustard are quite a big “dill,” so we recommend starting there. For your entrée, the Cellar Shrimp and Grits with tasso cream sauce and the Pan-Seared Catfish are local favorites. If you’re craving more turf than surf, you cannot go wrong with the Cellar Signature Ribeye. But no matter what you select, their extensive wine selection will provide the perfect pairing for any dish.

After dinner, visit The Cellar’s casual venue, The Bays. With a large bar, two patios and plenty of games (Giant Jenga, anyone?), there’s abundant space to sit back and catch up with your gal pals. Live music is a staple here so check their website to see who’s playing.

Cocktails at The Pharmacy

Wind down the evening with a nightcap at Newnan’s very own speakeasy. Just steps from The Cellar and The Bay, The Pharmacy is a secret worth sharing. It’s sultry ambiance, jazzy acoustics and craft cocktails harken back to the Prohibition Era.

Fortunately, no laws need to be broken in order to have a good time.

Breakfast at Brown St. Bodega

What’s cookin’? Something really yummy lookin’. Brown St. Bodega is an especially tasty way to start the day. They have all your breakfast faves (bacon, egg and cheese biscuit, anyone?) plus some exciting new flavs (ahem, lavender lemon bread & almond biscotti).

And don’t you worry, there’s no need to swing through Starbies. They’ve got coffee, too, and plenty of it!

Morning Activity: Pottery at Mudhaven Pottery Studio

Put a creative spin on your weekend by signing up for a pottery workshop at Mudhaven Pottery Studio. Just bring yourself and your friends: the workshop includes all the supplies you’ll need to learn basic wheel-throwing techniques and create up to three pieces (Patrick Swayze not included). Once you’ve crafted your masterpiece, select your favorite glaze color and Mudhaven will take care of the rest.

Please note: Pottery pieces will be ready for pickup in 6-8 weeks, just in time for your next girls’ trip!

Lunch at Lisa’s Crêperie

There isn’t a bad seat in the house, but the front patio is especially Instagrammable.

Brunch at Senoia Coffee & Cafe

This charming café nestled in the heart of Senoia has everything to start your morning off right. Savory breakfast lovers will enjoy the avocado toast and quiche. If you’re apt to wake up with a sweet tooth, you can’t miss out on the peanut butter banana toast and a big, fluffy cinnamon roll. Or order the waffles and bacon for the best of both worlds!

Let’s not forget plenty of freshly brewed coffee, made just as you like it.

Late Morning Activity: Shopping in Senoia and Newnan

After brunch, spend the afternoon in downtown Senoia, then head over to Newnan for some of the best local shopping this side of Atlanta. Boutiques and specialty stores dot the streets of both downtowns and they’re all just so gosh darn charming.

Our favorite is the Strawberry Shortcake sundae, an indulgent blend of fresh strawberries, velvety ice cream and pound cake, topped with a whole lot of whipped cream.

Lisa’s Creperie & Cafe

Where: Senoia

Nestled in the heart of Senoia, Lisa’s Crêperie & Cafe has captured Parisian culture and serves it wrapped in a delicately fluffy pancake. Try out classic combos like strawberries and cream or savory sensations like ham and cheese. Their menu updates daily and uses only the freshest ingredients from local produce, including herbs right from Lisa’s garden!

We can’t get enough of Nutella and Banana, a sweet treat drizzled with decadent chocolate. No matter your flavor, there’s a crêpe for every craving.

Georgia Chocolate Factory

Where: Newnan

If you want to view paradise, simply look around at the Georgia Chocolate Factory. Their downtown Newnan shop is choc’ full of gourmet chocolates, pralines, toffees and truffles. But since this is
paradise, there has to be ice cream.

We recommend ordering a scoop (or two) in one of their homemade waffle cones; they come plain or dipped in chocolate with sprinkles or nuts! And what’s a chocolate factory without candy? Their incredible selection of individual and unique boxed candies is enough to put even Willy Wonka to shame.

Cakes by Debbie

Where: Newnan

Looking for a top-tier dessert? Cakes by Debbie has cookies, donuts, pies, pastries and, of course, custom cakes for any occasion. Many of Debbie’s recipes have been lovingly passed down from her family and friends, making for some truly show-stopping confections.

No, really. Debbie has created desserts for a number of movies and television shows, including Drop Dead Diva, and has competed in TLC’s Ultimate Cake Off – a competition baking show where contestants construct specialty cakes of at least five feet in size.

If a life-sized cake is a tall order, might we suggest starting off with the petit fours for a bite-sized delight?

Leaf and Bean

If breakfast is the most important meal of the day, Leaf and Bean certainly makes it the tastiest as well. Enjoy a their delicious pastries – any time of day!

Coweta County is filled with opportunities to run, jump, climb and play. Whether you want to slow down for a stroll or wear the little ones out before nap time, parents will enjoy these activities just as much as the kids. Read on to plan a trip that’s fun for all ages!

ChildrenConnect Museum

Who says learning can’t be fun? With four Creative Playrooms, the ChildrenConnect is where your child’s imagination can run wild while they enjoy discovery and meaningful play. The Pre-K Playroom offers a safe space for toddlers to play, learn and grow while the Imagination Lab offers drop-in crafts and creative materials. The Your World Room comes complete with costumes, a play-bank and a play-grocery store for fully immersive play. The Connecting Room lets little engineers build with Legos, Knex and Fossils. Watch your child’s imagination come to life!

That’s the Ticket: We recommend buying tickets online in advance as there is limited capacity. Kids enter for $10, adults and children under 10-months are free!

Chattahoochee Bend State Park

Stretch your legs and get your heart pumping at one of Georgia’s largest state parks. With five miles of river frontage, 12 miles of hiking and four miles of biking trails, you’ll spend your day surrounded by scenic views. Cast a line along the river then fire up the grill to enjoy your catch of the day at one of the on-site picnic shelters. A large playground gives little ones and big kids alike a safe place to run free. Cottage, Tent, trailer, RV and hike/paddle-in campsites turn daytime fun into an overnight retreat.

Potty Break: Restrooms are available at the Day-Use Area (the playground is also here), the Visitor Center and the campsites. Unless you’re taking the long route, you can leave the toilet paper at home!

Ashley Park

A trip to Coweta County doesn’t have to be all go-go-go. Slow down and stroll through this open-air shopping center. Unwind and lean back while you catch the latest flicks at Regal Cinemas Georgian 14. With an expanded menu brought to your seat, you’ll feel right at home in front of the big screen. Hungry for more? You can grab a bite at any of the 17 restaurants. From Korean BBQ to Neapolitan pizza, there is sure to be something to appease even the pickiest of appetites. Here’s the scoop on dessert: Creamistry’s fresh ice cream and liquid nitrogen smoke shows are a can’t-miss. With nearly 50 retailers ranging from clothing and shoe stores to nail salons, forgetting something at home is now yesterday’s worry.

Free Events: Keep an eye on Ashley Park’s website for free family-friendly events, such as easy listening live music on the Green and a Christmas tree lighting festival. We even heard Anna, Elsa & Olaf will be there!

Carl Miller Park

Swing, slide and splash on this massive playground that’s definitely worth the drive! The 32,000 sq/ft kids castle and 2,400 sq/ft splash pad are the wonderland your kids have been dreaming of! Pavilions, picnic tables and charcoal grills mean the fun doesn’t have to end at lunchtime. The playground is open year-round and the splash pad flows from April 1 – September 6, meaning no matter the season, there’s always fun to be had.

Don’t Forget the SPF: Even though sunshades and trees offer plenty of shade, this outdoor park can still get pretty sunny in the summer. Pack sunscreen and UV-protective clothing, especially if you plan to visit the splash pad!

Urban Air Trampoline and Adventure Park

Trampolines, climbing walls and ropes course galore–your kids will soar through this indoor adventure arena! Whether you prefer a high-octane race on the go-kart track or teeing up at the neon jungle putt-putt, siblings can put their rivalry to the test in some light-hearted competition. Refuel, rehydrate and relax at the Urban Air Café, stocked with kids’ favorites. A safe and secluded “Seven & Under” area means little ones won’t have to miss out on the fun just because they’re young.

Safety First: Jumping, climbing and running is a blast but might cause a boo-boo. Don’t worry, Urban Air has some pretty strict safety rules that will keep you and your children from any bumps or bruises.
